- Pantone colour of the year, as represented by this little tuft of forest moss.<br />
<br />
- Mr. Hausfrau and I made our first batch of blini for a date night recently...they were SO good!<br />

- Spanish Banks in Vancouver - we walked here on New Years Day.<br />
<br />
- Table decor from a Hawaiian themed dinner party we hosted.<br />
<br />
- My mom with Oliver and Charlotte - love this shot.<br />
<br />
- These guys got bashed up and rubbed onto a goose we roasted. Turned out great too!<br />

Ok, so the other night I woke up and had to jot down an idea; it had to do with this song, which I couldn't get out of my head.<br />
<br />
What if we built a city? On rock and roll?<br />

We go to a local ceremony to remember the sacrifices made for the country we love.<br />

We wrapped up the school year in the art room with this fun colourful clay project!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-gxKpsuJViwuEYCPlzJ77buMH1zfZI1erAetdIjNY1XRmK0P9BbNDRMSu4_f-_9CjE45YctPq5kVMNisBxRyAOiYoS9yQwlMNpXfZ9NuxUaw1p95dvheQ3MzYAR23KLKsW13lUHYXNfE/s1600/suns1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-gxKpsuJViwuEYCPlzJ77buMH1zfZI1erAetdIjNY1XRmK0P9BbNDRMSu4_f-_9CjE45YctPq5kVMNisBxRyAOiYoS9yQwlMNpXfZ9NuxUaw1p95dvheQ3MzYAR23KLKsW13lUHYXNfE/s640/suns1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<u><b><br /></b></u>
<u><b>Supplies</b></u><br />
<br />
Air-dry clay (white is best)<br />
1 drinking straw<br />
Multi-coloured Sharpie markers<br />
Acrylic finishing medium in high gloss<br />
Paint brushes<br />
<br />
(this project was completed in two parts on two different days to allow for drying time)<br />
<br />
<br />
I handed out small amounts of the clay and the students (varying in ages of 5 - 8) flattened the mound with the palms of their hands, forming a circle. With a sharp pencil, they drew a circle with a centimeter margin on their clay. Then with scissors, snipped sun rays. The kids then made imprint marks for eyes, nose and mouth, again with a sharp pencil. Smoothing everything out with fingers dipped in water was the last step on day one of this project. When they were layed down for drying, I pushed a drinking straw through the top of each, so that the suns could be hung with string as ornaments.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4tkWJ_wQpmeHaiPWZlXliBglyiKOTvx2TIxal0m4gZ_f0WXirp0Ug5Nvf4xIZdwJ8nyHph9XTuWsM1QV7GnuLK51ODVF-iD-tcLEE3NAlm8eu-k79PKDQLMioA9kSYe9zMUhnXYymtQ4/s1600/Suns.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4tkWJ_wQpmeHaiPWZlXliBglyiKOTvx2TIxal0m4gZ_f0WXirp0Ug5Nvf4xIZdwJ8nyHph9XTuWsM1QV7GnuLK51ODVF-iD-tcLEE3NAlm8eu-k79PKDQLMioA9kSYe9zMUhnXYymtQ4/s640/Suns.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I left them to dry on the racks in the studio for a full week.<br />
<br />
On the second day of this project, the kids were encouraged to use as many colours as possible. We applied a thin coat of high gloss finishing medium and then they were ready!<br />
<br />
These were some of my favorites:<br />

Some snapshots of recent adventures!<br />
<br />
We recently had a chance to get away from town to discover a sweet coastal community, <a href="http://www.hellobc.com/sechelt.aspx" target="_blank">Sechelt</a>. <br />
<br />
We could hardly believe this beautiful playground we discovered overlooking the ocean:<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
One sunny Sunday, we roamed around <a href="http://shopmain.ca/" target="_blank">Main Street</a> in Vancouver, were I got lots of new ideas and inspirations for art lessons. <br />
<br />
This picture we took of Oliver and Charlotte on the walk astonished me...they are growing so quickly!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjivqXr0YE-qNnERfsYqaFjgBxfkrCaWd75oNx7FH2_Yye3N15Mi1xLJA6cmM2UxxDEUwk2XEyOvSRXrpHivaQxFho5BrB_E0Nyk5-fAZ-2SRd6Q3IFxDRp7-8GFDnor-doQRpUN6MtXis/s1600/C+%2526+O.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjivqXr0YE-qNnERfsYqaFjgBxfkrCaWd75oNx7FH2_Yye3N15Mi1xLJA6cmM2UxxDEUwk2XEyOvSRXrpHivaQxFho5BrB_E0Nyk5-fAZ-2SRd6Q3IFxDRp7-8GFDnor-doQRpUN6MtXis/s640/C+%2526+O.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>

<br />
Teachers in BC recently took some time out of the classroom to learn a new curriculum. <br />
<br />
The Parks Board in our town arranged for various camps to keep the children busy that day.<br />
<br />
Oliver and his oldest friend (they have known each other since their birth!) Hudson, canoed the <a href="https://www.burnaby.ca/things-to-do/explore-outdoors/shorelines---lakes/deer-lake-park.html" target="_blank">local lake</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Being a stay at home mom (mainly) has its perks; the <a href="http://www.bpl.bc.ca/locations-hours/mcgill" target="_blank">local library</a> pulls out their bins of lego on rainy days...we spent more than half a day there recently, building little magical worlds and special memories:<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
I had the privilege of being invited as guest art instructor at the <a href="https://www.burnaby.ca/Things-To-Do/Festivals-and-Events/Rhododendron-Festival.html" target="_blank">Rhododendron Festival</a> at the Lake last Sunday. There must have been a hundred people who tried their best to draw a bee with the graphite pencils we had on hand...I managed to get some photos!<br />

At Oliver's hilltop elementary school, I spotted this lovely group project in the hallway between two classes, symbolizing student and teachers' desire to work with and respect one another. I can see ribbons with names on them, likely woven into the mix by each individual. Lovely both in form and function!<br />

Surfacing to share a lesson from the art classes for children I'm currently teaching!<br />
<br />
I've been having such a fun time letting the littles explore texture, colour, and different mediums. They are open to new ideas almost immediately and quickly learn to manipulate the techniques they've learned to suit their personal style.<br />
<br />
Recently, I made these lovely multi-media pieces with my 5 - 9 year old class. We called the works "The Midnight Pond". Here's how we made them!<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ8rQpdT00nLBP-laIr5ej7J-z9yiNeD2tlH5kVv7fLGxbTomRyVRrn8ejdoa2KGVmbyPLv0P4f2VLBzBjCQk6JzNJZl1uVVY-Rt-1lwMRtGabCekSdJis_Qef2JjojPWObCY61JjbV44/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ8rQpdT00nLBP-laIr5ej7J-z9yiNeD2tlH5kVv7fLGxbTomRyVRrn8ejdoa2KGVmbyPLv0P4f2VLBzBjCQk6JzNJZl1uVVY-Rt-1lwMRtGabCekSdJis_Qef2JjojPWObCY61JjbV44/s640/008.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">'The Midnight Pond'</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

First, we made our own patterned paper by using a variety of shades in the same colour family (watercolours work well) on plain old computer paper. (Sounds crazy, but the texture of hand painted computer paper is <i>perfect</i> for what we are doing here.)</div>

Let those guys dry.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, with a pencil draw a hatch pattern on some white cardstock (I cut them to a 8.5 x 5.5' size...more manageable for this age group with the colouring we are about to do). <br />
<br />
Then let the children pick a selection of blue shades from piles of crayons, pastels, pencil crayons, markers, you could even let them paint one or two of the squares! The idea here is to have them explore the various mediums within a structured pattern. <br />
<br />
The end effect is just the right balance between order and disorder for visual interest. <br />
<br />
I outlined the one square that is going to represent the moon in yellow, to avoid the "I forgot to leave a square for the moon!" cry that is bound to happen with some students.<br />

I thought these nature-inspired pieced turned out quite well! They reminded me a bit of the <a href="http://hilltophausfrau.blogspot.ca/2015/02/art-is-for-everybody.html" target="_blank">Lily Pad art </a>I did a few years back. It's fun to switch up the techniques to keep the kids learning and on their toes!<br />

Thanks for stopping by...</div>

When the skies are grey and the nights long here in the Pacific Northwest, I often gravitate to the melancholy for inspiration when coming up with themes for art classes.<br />
<br />
My English undergraduate degree provides limitless fodder for the melancholic; Alfred Lord Tennyson's <i><a href="https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/kraken" target="_blank">The Kraken</a> </i>is one of my favorite examples of this mood.<br />
<i><br /></i>
I read this short poem for my class of intermediate elementary school students, lingering for not very long on the words 'abysmal' , 'shadowy', 'sickly' and...eeeeep!... 'die'! Rather, I hoped for 'deep', 'enormous', 'slumbering green' to colour the imaginations of these student artists before me.<br />
<br />
The plan was multi-faceted: I was going to teach them <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hjwa_owTcfE" target="_blank">watercolour grading principles</a>, incorporating minor collage and printmaking techniques also.<br />
<br />
Here are the results!<br />

Here's another snapshot from one of my studio classes, this time from 'Collage and Printmaking' for 8 -12 year-olds.<br />
<br />
I came up with the subject for this piece in my subconscious, as Mr. Hausfrau and I were planning a petite re-decor of our living space. A case of "art imitating life"!<br />
<br />
These are just a few of the finished collages entitled <b>'Table in the Hall'</b>.<br />
<i>Mediums: watercolour, phonebook pages, acrylic finishing medium, sharpie.</i><br />

Always trying to teach multiple art techniques in one lesson, I wove in creating blooms in the watercolour while it was still wet, <a href="http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/watercolor-painting-technique-creating-texture-wit.html" target="_blank">using saline</a>.<br />

I took the time to create a digital collage of vintage telephone pages to hand out for students who wanted to recreate this project at home but didn't have access to phone book pages to rip up (a rare find these days!) <br />
<br />
Feel free to copy this high resolution version for your own makings!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif9AIVKpTQWoqExkVNDyr5Qqf8tNOcYVCkv1Hbx46VY_BklJiGnRi00O2-5nMsejnsM1N7XAmJFVsO_nHMlWR6eO6jfDme1nlUZB3I9zgp0ylXF6b9QZiG7UWlBjdeo3QpXTS1QT6jDcE/s1600/phone+book.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif9AIVKpTQWoqExkVNDyr5Qqf8tNOcYVCkv1Hbx46VY_BklJiGnRi00O2-5nMsejnsM1N7XAmJFVsO_nHMlWR6eO6jfDme1nlUZB3I9zgp0ylXF6b9QZiG7UWlBjdeo3QpXTS1QT6jDcE/s640/phone+book.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The students created<i> really</i> gorgeous art and learned some new techniques. I designed the overall layout of this project to be simple, with lots of whitespace so that despite the vintage subject, there would be a modern effect in the end.<br />
<br />
It all started with the new/old phone in our newly 'scaped living room...you just never know where inspiration comes from!<br />

Woah! November ran away from me!<br />
<br />
I've been happily busy, teaching art around town and keeping haus, as always. Here are some discoveries and highlights from the past month, in the studio and out:<br />

I get regular requests to post my project design ideas sooooo: here's another one!<br />
<br />
The girls over at <a href="http://portandquarter.com/trend-city-art/" target="_blank">Port and Quarter</a> in Vancouver actually inspired this concept. The 'hometown homage' has long been on my list of potential art themes and this week I introduced it in both my <a href="https://www.burnaby.ca/Things-To-Do/Arts-and-Heritage/Shadbolt-Centre-for-the-Arts.html" target="_blank">kid and the adult classes</a>.<br />
<br />
With the children, we focused on our own lakeside town, Burnaby, BC (otherwise know as BBY). I found a comprehensive map of the city, printed off a copy for each artist (in black and white) to use as our collage base. Then some quick practice at drawing letters, et voila!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyc1yHbOm2AEnQ1A4LlB_RWrz_sTqAw6lGCUeWUZRTesDn_AZkVVSA0Gz23I4lxP04Z_tA-5Y3PiqfYMKioe9jOpt3qp2a2p3wwW0jcaa9wEsNq82GWOCR3nl9pyfO8Dof95PfemIypCY/s1600/City+Art+Kids+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyc1yHbOm2AEnQ1A4LlB_RWrz_sTqAw6lGCUeWUZRTesDn_AZkVVSA0Gz23I4lxP04Z_tA-5Y3PiqfYMKioe9jOpt3qp2a2p3wwW0jcaa9wEsNq82GWOCR3nl9pyfO8Dof95PfemIypCY/s640/City+Art+Kids+Collage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the map we used:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAgNp82cdRfa_Mzchh1TA5DGpeXYYskpvAC8h2LlEmiGP4eDS_2MD6CYlTd2D8_Yk-4pT2EG0fogUshZ0hT4NOH0JuiPD8-ZxwiwckC-4xZ4DDB75VfF-S7j2zdNvlv647imlB_xAQzec/s1600/burnaby.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAgNp82cdRfa_Mzchh1TA5DGpeXYYskpvAC8h2LlEmiGP4eDS_2MD6CYlTd2D8_Yk-4pT2EG0fogUshZ0hT4NOH0JuiPD8-ZxwiwckC-4xZ4DDB75VfF-S7j2zdNvlv647imlB_xAQzec/s640/burnaby.jpg" width="474" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After the children cut the map up and arranged the bits on the black cardstock, they smeared some custom blended periwinkle acrylic paint here and there, using plastic forks for some added texture. They drew the 'BBY' letters onto a pretty contrasting mint coloured cardstock and outlined them in black sharpie. After they had been cut out and glued onto the page, they used some yellow and orange washi tape (sourced at none other than IKEA!) to add pops of colour. A coat of clear high-gloss finishing medium was the very last step.<br />
<br />
We had many different arrangements from the students. I think the finished products turned out really well!<br />

After my <a href="http://hilltophausfrau.blogspot.ca/2015/09/professional-development.html" target="_blank">recent field trip</a> to Portland, OR, I knew that I wanted to be making more "food art" with my students this year.<br />
<br />
Sometimes art is edible; food on the table that really looks too beautiful to eat (we eat it anyway!). In the studio though, I wanted the kids to fashion our collage materials into "ingredients". To re imagine the materials on hand.<br />
<br />
To start the lesson, I read <a href="http://www.amazon.ca/Secret-Pizza-Party-Adam-Rubin/dp/0803739478" target="_blank">Secret Pizza Party</a> by Adam Rubin and illustrated by Daniel Salmieri. What a funny story!<br />
<br />
Once we'd gotten excited about our favorite toppings and that we were about to become chefs (artists) in our own little kitchens (studio), the children started making their own version of the perfect pizza.<br />
<br />
I got everyone starting by handing out pre-cut corrugated cardboard rounds.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
We talked a little bit about topping alternatives too: "what about a pickle and peanut butter pie?" asked one girl. "Mmmmm...I would love an apple - cheddar pizza" suggested another bright-eyed, sauce-adverse tot. Anything goes! One class, where parent participation was encouraged, I passed around a cookbook that included all sorts of combination ideas including truffles, kimchi, and chocolate. This collage idea could very easily be turned into a project for adults too. Add a bottle of wine and some snacks; it's an art party! <br />
<br />
All in all, a project that sent everyone home hungry for the real thing! </div>

I think every art instructor (at least: one I'd respect) should expand their own horizon - to learn a different way of looking at and making things.<br />
<br />
Hence: a field trip to Portland for me and my family!<br />
<br />
<br />
Ok first off: there were donuts. And lineups <i>for</i> the donuts. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDY4EdDF6586-ImEQNc1F4Qr1s5shg7YP6zLj6lI1qRI8VWBjfqz26G93tuwRVYs3tZjCpolZhomxxLi3jq4sCSlrEUXkFGrxabn7qRwxczNfuFb3BbETwS1-UZHwFivhj89GL7Pk3yJg/s1600/portland+trip1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDY4EdDF6586-ImEQNc1F4Qr1s5shg7YP6zLj6lI1qRI8VWBjfqz26G93tuwRVYs3tZjCpolZhomxxLi3jq4sCSlrEUXkFGrxabn7qRwxczNfuFb3BbETwS1-UZHwFivhj89GL7Pk3yJg/s640/portland+trip1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Alberta Street was crazy fun for me...everywhere I looked, there was another whimsical scene! (I'm really going to try to use the clothespin inspiration in some way this semester.)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNe9-z2sHWfTcf_tZFsy0cXbbMrcVbYdvnrCCEyxn1CJGELQ3KW9d3_3qxr9Ud5j_PsmmT88QEH5zXZ16HUpuWiDY-L6666XqHMWWcTRqgNsf6RpwXhLYKU8-skm39hAFYdS-tFBH3sPA/s1600/portland+trip2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNe9-z2sHWfTcf_tZFsy0cXbbMrcVbYdvnrCCEyxn1CJGELQ3KW9d3_3qxr9Ud5j_PsmmT88QEH5zXZ16HUpuWiDY-L6666XqHMWWcTRqgNsf6RpwXhLYKU8-skm39hAFYdS-tFBH3sPA/s640/portland+trip2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Food is obviously a completely other scene in Portland (we hit the foodtrucks one night...so much fun!). This sandwich sculpture below by <a href="http://jessieweitzel.com/" target="_blank">Jessie Weitzel</a> was <i>such</i> a fantastic find.<br />
<br />
(Check out my family as germs at the lovely <a href="https://www.omsi.edu/" target="_blank">Oregon Museum of Science and Industry!</a> We spent a wonderful day there too.)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFslq1oZqQErouhaqqzDlN54Aht089luFHIhPhcctyblC9qdgGb46X7tAz4KYwrVNRp9l8txHisincX11q670tyI_WiltQeUTOcGzgTb8PnYurzYIDSJHPIHb7D_IqXDlem7xJWuMT-jE/s1600/portland+trip3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFslq1oZqQErouhaqqzDlN54Aht089luFHIhPhcctyblC9qdgGb46X7tAz4KYwrVNRp9l8txHisincX11q670tyI_WiltQeUTOcGzgTb8PnYurzYIDSJHPIHb7D_IqXDlem7xJWuMT-jE/s640/portland+trip3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
...and more food sculptures, this time in textile form. Oliver <i>squealed</i> when he saw this knitted roasted chicken at an art shop.<br />
<br />
Another great surprise were all the street murals. I took so many pictures, I can't possibly fit them all in here!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropomorphism" target="_blank">Anthropomorphism</a> was the predominant genre in Portland this summer, visible in the street murals, galleries, coffee shops...it was <i>everywhere</i>! I'm inspired by some of the greats (and Portland residents to-boot): <a href="http://ryanberkley.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">Ryan Berkeley</a>, <a href="http://thenimbleowl.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">Stephanie Brachmann</a> and <a href="http://www.theblackapple.typepad.com/" target="_blank">Emily Martin</a> to name a few!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAIn73dO6B4c7UlbNTJAcg_HTiWEc6SKPPGRh4ISpC5oQV3P1QYlfvLWfOUDdyiXi2U5PF6LD3AwJOOqpKv8lRhVI5GTaiiJdXLTbJnAWlfcQHQP98_KsnXNeW0v6nYxapkViJzSGH9bw/s1600/portland+trip4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAIn73dO6B4c7UlbNTJAcg_HTiWEc6SKPPGRh4ISpC5oQV3P1QYlfvLWfOUDdyiXi2U5PF6LD3AwJOOqpKv8lRhVI5GTaiiJdXLTbJnAWlfcQHQP98_KsnXNeW0v6nYxapkViJzSGH9bw/s640/portland+trip4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Only a five hour drive down the I5 from Vancouver, BC, Portland was a wonderful family vacation. The city of "beers, beards and bikes" did <i>not</i> disappoint!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVW9_cbse9Kxs-nY-_ets6UO0q8zGAXX4hJWMFVPPGfyRGR1l7LM2UFyIvyscq92Zwrhz_o6vABXoRGkhRGqM08sQuUUo7pXT_XhM4LQAmhNDJiLol1SIxovCeCxSuS5Y9y9j67nBG4Hc/s1600/Portland+Trip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVW9_cbse9Kxs-nY-_ets6UO0q8zGAXX4hJWMFVPPGfyRGR1l7LM2UFyIvyscq92Zwrhz_o6vABXoRGkhRGqM08sQuUUo7pXT_XhM4LQAmhNDJiLol1SIxovCeCxSuS5Y9y9j67nBG4Hc/s640/Portland+Trip.jpg" width="624" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now I'm back and ready to get my art on with all my students...you should all be ready for some Portland-inspired art happening this year!<br />

I dug an old <a href="https://www.girlguides.ca/web/" target="_blank">Girl Guide</a> camp snack 'recipe' out of the vault this summer! I remember stringing these up as a young Guide in the '80's...my kids had so much fun making (and eating) them! We brought them along as a surprise for friends we met for picnics and as roadtrip treats too.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnSBkt1XjfLJ5cKmfutTv2vI4huySZWubpvfPlS5d3K83tkf4rdS5nKfnWHi3Bk5zWTWtXG6Gm9rDJFlSpgPx0QuKUbJ4oCO62b5-IWNNJsZyM2jPGAPYF7auNAzdWe1CSDgbgEx0ZraU/s1600/Summer+snacks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="436" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnSBkt1XjfLJ5cKmfutTv2vI4huySZWubpvfPlS5d3K83tkf4rdS5nKfnWHi3Bk5zWTWtXG6Gm9rDJFlSpgPx0QuKUbJ4oCO62b5-IWNNJsZyM2jPGAPYF7auNAzdWe1CSDgbgEx0ZraU/s640/Summer+snacks.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First: Gather a few different string-able snacks. I chose <a href="https://www.onedegreeorganics.com/products/68" target="_blank">cereal</a>, <a href="http://www.presidentschoice.ca/en_CA/products/productlisting/pc_blue_menu_multigrain_alphabet_pretzels17083.html" target="_blank">pretzels</a>, and <a href="http://www.life-savers.com/products#/collisions_tm_bag" target="_blank">gummy lifesavers</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEw0rVU_GnDjupDx4a1XD_YQDVOTgZ4OYxDuti1YlpudnVRaOQQokB2jI-sJEDwrheP8s26XcIBJ6ym4B4FExfVQHMQoES9elTv50WLP6Gnkpq-wnsClmeo8f3ySNhOS-rtXFT1YZ3RYw/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEw0rVU_GnDjupDx4a1XD_YQDVOTgZ4OYxDuti1YlpudnVRaOQQokB2jI-sJEDwrheP8s26XcIBJ6ym4B4FExfVQHMQoES9elTv50WLP6Gnkpq-wnsClmeo8f3ySNhOS-rtXFT1YZ3RYw/s640/015.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I helped the kids get started by tying one piece of cereal to the very end of the string and then creating a pointy tip on the other end by wrapping some tape as a "needle".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibrjwSzE7Mmqm8XKWbDUrimg5XkQYeEd2ofcPpr05Xr22YSYGdzBMkHK7wY_Lik8I8waBTbbNh6unGkyKu-ExanRhDnDYvuOnaiYpnfbOaOhgTCYq8b2pSeSWxuUEKaCbTF9AtiunXeAA/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibrjwSzE7Mmqm8XKWbDUrimg5XkQYeEd2ofcPpr05Xr22YSYGdzBMkHK7wY_Lik8I8waBTbbNh6unGkyKu-ExanRhDnDYvuOnaiYpnfbOaOhgTCYq8b2pSeSWxuUEKaCbTF9AtiunXeAA/s640/009.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrqp4wNnswHsmjijHA_3PHKMjwCBVAOzZRZMrX4PilriIB7P4RD3CkseCBcBJqqkHZZN1rxMGC2BOe66qIVS1ooN5frZ5nwSjR6kMcPLB0XT6MePgGwr_aZAW08y6HXmw-pw6SqU6iCBQ/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrqp4wNnswHsmjijHA_3PHKMjwCBVAOzZRZMrX4PilriIB7P4RD3CkseCBcBJqqkHZZN1rxMGC2BOe66qIVS1ooN5frZ5nwSjR6kMcPLB0XT6MePgGwr_aZAW08y6HXmw-pw6SqU6iCBQ/s640/010.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't let them go crazy on the candy, of course (five per necklace only), and had them count out the grain snacks in fives, which turned out to be a handy math lesson for four-year-old Charlotte!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(Only after they were done did I realize that the snacklaces were counted and structured exactly like decades on a Rosary. *Sigh* Catholic habits...)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I've long admired the art of UK native, <a href="http://ashleypercival.com/" target="_blank">Ashley Percival</a>. His whimsical illustrations are so cheerful!<br />
<br />
I thought his would be the perfect style to use as inspiration for a new drawing lesson with the children in my <a href="http://www.burnaby.ca/Things-To-Do/Arts-and-Heritage/Shadbolt-Centre-for-the-Arts.html" target="_blank">art class</a> last week.<br />
<br />
We used this illustration as our prototype:<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJFk_sFdvIIYXbFpSV7OmMbJPVzdt0sLUzcR1RIb28flsPiCU8BK_4eCy_sR56uD_lkW3zhmvFKydtLgN65-e7xrYH-yNN-9MCP5bgEzJaj9L62H-CKWZlqEiY4lwUkS71_CTOhxzYC2g/s1600/rabbit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJFk_sFdvIIYXbFpSV7OmMbJPVzdt0sLUzcR1RIb28flsPiCU8BK_4eCy_sR56uD_lkW3zhmvFKydtLgN65-e7xrYH-yNN-9MCP5bgEzJaj9L62H-CKWZlqEiY4lwUkS71_CTOhxzYC2g/s640/rabbit.jpg" width="452" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">Artist: </span><i style="font-size: medium;"><a href="http://ashleypercival.com/" target="_blank">Ashley Percival</a></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
To get the children going, I created a template for the sweater.<div>
<br />
<br />
(I find children under the age of 12 tend to draw to a very small scale. Having the sweater at a set size forced them to stick to the larger scale!)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ6kbsVwXR5FUkoswTMzm9DWpl7ixaMyf2Sq1fEPDME3cpmBH_RaydfzLS2ZxYDlC_5Ho0lyGHNzhgv6rpKI4q8q_KNlRqvvgkswbwBLIRKsyTPSlY9wUVZ3tvsWPrsOkHDJ0Y7BZRY-g/s1600/018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ6kbsVwXR5FUkoswTMzm9DWpl7ixaMyf2Sq1fEPDME3cpmBH_RaydfzLS2ZxYDlC_5Ho0lyGHNzhgv6rpKI4q8q_KNlRqvvgkswbwBLIRKsyTPSlY9wUVZ3tvsWPrsOkHDJ0Y7BZRY-g/s640/018.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I had each child trace the template onto funky printed paper, cut out the sweaters and glue them into the middle of a piece of white cardstock.<br />
<br />
From this point, they had to draw on:<br />
<br />
- a head<br />
- ears<br />
- a jaunty cap<br />
- eyes<br />
- rosy cheeks<br />
- nose/whiskers/mouth<br />
- paws<br />
- skinny jeans<br />
- shoes<br />
- skateboard<br />

Better late than never! I'm posting some pictures of a gallery reception meant to honor a local (national...a GLOBAL) legend, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Suzuki" target="_blank">David Suzuki</a>. A group of about 40 artists (including moi, bien sur) represented his visage in their respective mediums.<br />
<br />
I was interviewed as a participating artist too! (article <a href="http://www.vancourier.com/entertainment/art-show-pays-tribute-to-david-suzuki-1.1790782" target="_blank">here</a>)<br />
