In Focus: Ed Emberley

Anyone familiar with the art of Ed Emberley will recognize the Hilltop Hausfrau banners these past few months.

Emberley published a collection of marvelous drawing instruction books in the '70's...which I've only very recently discovered!

I love drawing with Oliver and Charlotte but find it challenging to give them "drawing lessons".  Looking for some help from my local public library branch is when I found "Make a World" (I also have a German version...dunno why...).

I started of by drawing a marching band by following his instructions for each individual musician.

(Almost six-year-old) Oliver got right into it with me.  He very deftly draws supermans everywhere (even in places we do not appreciate drawings being drawn) and passes on his learning to anyone who wants to learn.

Then I had some fun, taking Emberley's teachings and making them my own!

Now as we approach autumn, I'm going to be pulling this book from the shelves when we are in need of some rainy day activities.  To remind myself of the fun, I created a little forest creature menagerie!

This book (and any of his others, I am sure!) is definitely worth buying - you and/or your budding artist family members will love the courage and confidence Ed Emberley instills!

  1. Sounds like a lot of fun, I like your squirrel and bunny. Going to do some research on Ed Emberley now, never heard of him before.

  2. What cute illustrations :)
This is the kind of learning I would have to do for drawing...I'm terrible!

  3. These are wonderful! I've never heard of Emberley before either but I love how simple, but clever, the drawings are!

  4. Oh wow, I remember learning about Ed Emberley in elementary school art class! I had completely forgotten about it until you mentioned it, though. How fun!

  5. This brings me back! I loved Ed Emberly books as a kid, and I remember lots of projects at the kitchen table over the winter!

  6. This sounds SO familiar and I think I've seen this book before. Fun activity for both kids and adults!!

Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier. Love finding fellow Canadian bloggers as well!

  7. Thanks for the EE love, people! We should have a link-up and all post our fave Emberley doodles someday...
